India and Brazil discuss defence industry collaboration and capacity building
India and Brazil have taken another significant step toward deepening their strategic and defence partnership as Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi held high-level meetings in Brasilia on Thursday. The discussions focused on expanding defence industry collaboration, strengthening capacity building initiatives and advancing long-term interoperability between the two nations.
Admiral Tripathi met Celso Amorim, Chief Advisor to the Brazilian President, and Defence Minister Jose Mucio Monteiro to review the rapidly growing defence engagements between India and Brazil. According to a statement posted by the Indian Navy Spokesperson on X, the talks centred on boosting strategic cooperation, enhancing joint operational frameworks, widening training avenues and strengthening maritime security mechanisms. Both sides also highlighted efforts to deepen coordination in Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), reflecting shared priorities in securing global maritime spaces.
The meeting also featured detailed discussions on emerging regional and global dynamics, including developments in the South Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific. Officials underscored the importance of the Global South’s role in shaping a stable, rules-based international order. The two countries reiterated their commitment to advancing their defence partnership under the spirit of “Bridges of Friendship,” a theme emphasising shared vision, trust and long-term cooperation.
Earlier on Wednesday, Admiral Tripathi held talks with Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen, Commander of the Brazilian Navy, to explore avenues for elevating maritime cooperation. Their discussions covered operational engagements, advanced training exchanges, hydrographic collaboration, and improved information-sharing mechanisms aimed at enhancing maritime domain awareness.
Both navies also reviewed opportunities for collaboration in defence industry development, technology innovation and the exchange of best practices. These areas, officials noted, are essential to strengthening long-term strategic convergence and fostering an India–Brazil partnership that contributes to security in the global maritime commons—particularly within the Global South.
Admiral Tripathi is on an official visit to Brazil from December 9 to 12 as part of efforts to consolidate the growing maritime partnership between the Indian Navy and the Brazilian Navy. The visit is considered a key component of the broader India–Brazil Strategic Partnership, which has strengthened in recent years through enhanced diplomatic, defence and economic cooperation.
During the visit, Admiral Tripathi will also hold discussions with Admiral Renato Rodrigues de Aguiar Freire, Chief of the Joint Staff of the Brazilian Armed Forces. The talks are expected to review ongoing bilateral maritime engagements, refine operational linkages and identify new areas for future collaboration.
The Indian Ministry of Defence stated that the visit includes interactions with operational commands, visits to Brazilian naval bases and shipyards, and exchanges with senior leadership to understand shared maritime priorities. These conversations will support cooperation in naval interoperability, capacity building and multilateral engagements, including South-South collaboration.
The ministry added that Admiral Tripathi’s visit reaffirms the Indian Navy’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Brazil in maritime security, professional exchanges and long-term capability development. The strengthened partnership aims to contribute meaningfully to stability and security across the global maritime commons.
