India concerned over Venezuela developments, urges dialogue after US capture of President Maduro

India has expressed deep concern over the rapidly evolving political situation in Venezuela following the controversial US military operation that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar called on all stakeholders to prioritise dialogue and ensure the safety and well-being of the Venezuelan people amid escalating tensions.

Speaking at an event in Luxembourg, Jaishankar underscored India’s long-standing relationship with Venezuela and emphasised that New Delhi’s foremost concern remains the humanitarian impact of the unfolding crisis. “We are concerned at the developments, but we would really urge all the parties involved to now sit down and come to a position which is in the interest of the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela,” he said.

The crisis escalated sharply after a US-led military operation on January 3, reportedly named Operation Absolute Resolve, resulted in the capture of President Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in Caracas. US special forces carried out targeted strikes in the Venezuelan capital before transferring the couple to New York, where they were presented before a federal court in Manhattan.

Maduro and Flores pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including narco-terrorism conspiracy and drug trafficking. The court ordered Maduro to remain in custody until his next hearing scheduled for March 17. During his appearance, Maduro asserted his innocence and claimed he remains the legitimate President of Venezuela.

Following his removal, Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in as Interim President by the country’s apex court, a move that has drawn mixed reactions internationally and intensified geopolitical debate.

Jaishankar reiterated that India’s approach remains guided by principles of peaceful resolution, non-interference, and regional stability. “At the end of the day, our concern is that Venezuela — a country with whom we have enjoyed good relations for many years — and its people should emerge well from the direction events are taking,” he added.

Earlier, on January 4, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also issued a statement describing the situation as “a matter of deep concern” and urged all parties to resolve differences through peaceful dialogue. The MEA reaffirmed India’s support for stability in the region and emphasised the importance of safeguarding civilians.

“The Embassy of India in Caracas is in contact with members of the Indian community and will continue to provide all possible assistance,” the MEA said, noting that the safety of Indian nationals remains a priority.

The developments in Venezuela have triggered widespread international reaction, with several countries questioning the legality and long-term consequences of the US intervention. Analysts note that India’s carefully calibrated response reflects its broader diplomatic posture — balancing strategic partnerships while advocating dialogue, multilateralism, and respect for international norms.

As global attention remains focused on Venezuela, India’s call for restraint and negotiation highlights its role as a responsible international actor seeking stability amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.
