
India Declares ‘New Chapter in Relations’ with Singapore Following Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong have officially elevated their nations’ bilateral relationship to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” during Modi’s two-day visit to Singapore.
In a productive meeting on Thursday, the two leaders discussed a broad range of collaborative areas, including Advanced Manufacturing, Connectivity, Digitalization, Healthcare & Medicine, Skills Development, and Sustainability. Randhir Jaiswal, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, shared the news on X, highlighting the establishment of this partnership.
Several key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, aiming to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. These agreements include:
- An MoU between India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry on the India-Singapore Semiconductor Ecosystem Partnership.
- An MoU between India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information on cooperation in digital technologies.
- An MoU between India’s Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Singapore’s Ministry of Education on educational cooperation and skills development.
- An MoU between India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Singapore’s Ministry of Health on cooperation in health and medicine.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi expressed admiration for Singapore as a model for development and emphasized India’s goal of replicating Singapore’s success in various sectors. He praised the new ministerial roundtables as groundbreaking and reiterated India’s commitment to collaboration in areas such as skilling, digitization, mobility, semiconductor technology, advanced manufacturing, AI, healthcare, sustainability, and cybersecurity.
Modi was ceremonially welcomed at the Singapore Parliament House, where he met with ministers and delegates from both countries and signed the visitor’s book.
The meeting between Modi and Wong is notable as it marks Wong’s first engagement with Modi since assuming office and Modi’s start of his third term as Prime Minister. Modi extended his congratulations to Wong, expressing confidence that under Wong’s leadership, Singapore will continue its rapid progress.
