India-Germany ties steady and growing in substance, says Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Wednesday described India-Germany ties as “enormously important,” stressing that the relationship is steady, predictable, and growing in substance at a time of global uncertainties.

Speaking alongside visiting German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul after talks in New Delhi, Jaishankar underlined Germany’s central role in India’s strategic calculus, both as Europe’s largest economy and as a member of the G4 advocating for UN Security Council reforms.

“For us, this is an enormously important relationship. It is growing in substance and carries greater value in today’s uncertain times. Predictability in policy makes it even more significant,” Jaishankar said.

The minister highlighted expanding cooperation in education and skilled labor mobility. He noted that Indian students now form the largest foreign student group in Germany and welcomed Berlin’s new skilled labor strategy as a framework for mutual benefit. Both sides also agreed on gratis visas for short-term school and college visits to encourage student exchanges.

On consular matters, Jaishankar raised the case of baby Ariha Shah, an Indian child in German foster care since 2021. He emphasized the need to uphold her cultural rights and ensure her upbringing in an Indian environment.

The discussion also reaffirmed close collaboration across security, economy, and global governance, with both sides acknowledging the importance of steady and predictable ties in an evolving world order.

Observers note that Jaishankar’s remarks signal continuity in India’s engagement with Germany, reinforcing its role as a trusted European partner in trade, technology, education, and multilateral cooperation.
