India rebuffs US claim of mediating peace with Pakistan at UNSC

The United States reiterated President Donald Trump’s claim of having played a key role in de-escalating the India-Pakistan conflict earlier this year, but India firmly rejected any suggestion of external mediation, asserting that the situation was resolved bilaterally.

Speaking at a UN Security Council debate on “Multilateralism and Peaceful Settlement of Disputes,” acting US representative Dorothy Shea credited “US leadership” for diffusing tensions between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack carried out by The Resistance Front (TRF).

“The United States, under President Trump’s leadership, played an important role in encouraging the parties to reach these resolutions,” Shea said.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P Harish, countered the claim, making it clear that the de-escalation followed a direct request from Pakistan and was not influenced by any third-party mediation. He said Operation Sindoor, India’s targeted response to the Pahalgam massacre, was a “focused, measured, and non-escalatory” military action.

Harish emphasized that the ceasefire was agreed upon after Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations contacted his Indian counterpart directly. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also confirmed that Pakistan had requested the ceasefire.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had personally told President Trump during a phone conversation that there was “no discussion or proposal for US mediation or a trade deal” linked to the ceasefire, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed.

President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had previously claimed the conflict was on the brink of turning nuclear and credited Trump’s intervention for halting escalation.

India’s stance remains clear: the resolution with Pakistan was bilateral, with no external role involved.
