India relocates students in Iran as tensions with Israel escalate

Amid growing tensions between Iran and Israel, the Indian government has begun relocating Indian students in Iran to safer areas, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Monday.

In an official statement, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the Indian Embassy in Tehran is closely monitoring the situation and actively engaging with students to ensure their safety. “In some cases, students are being relocated with the Embassy’s facilitation to safer places within Iran,” the statement read, adding that other options for evacuation are being explored.

The Embassy is also coordinating with local community leaders to stay updated on the welfare of Indian citizens across Iran. Over 1,500 Indian students—primarily medical students from Jammu and Kashmir—are currently studying in cities like Tehran, Shiraz, and Qom.

Earlier in the day, J&K’s former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah raised the issue with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, urging intervention for the safe return of stranded students. Concerned families have also appealed directly to PM Narendra Modi and the MEA.

To streamline communication, the Indian Embassy in Iran has shared a Google form and a Telegram channel link for updates. “It is important not to panic. Stay vigilant and maintain contact with the embassy,” the advisory stated.

The situation stems from Israel’s recent military offensive, “Operation Rising Lion,” which targeted Iran’s top military leadership and nuclear facilities. Iran has responded with retaliatory strikes, and the conflict shows signs of further escalation.

The MEA has also activated helplines in both Iran and Israel, urging Indian nationals to limit outdoor movement and stay alert.

Advisories are expected to continue as the situation evolves.
