Indian diaspora in Maldives celebrates PM Modi’s visit with pride and hope
Members of the Indian community in Maldives welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi with overwhelming enthusiasm during his recent two-day State visit to Male. Describing it as a “proud” and “historic” moment, the diaspora hailed the visit as a major boost to bilateral ties and the local business environment.
“Modi ji is here; we feel our godfather has arrived,” said Anil Bhav, an Indian resident in Male. “After a challenging period in relations, he just made it look so easy. We’re all excited and proud.”
Although not everyone had a chance to personally meet the Prime Minister, the community expressed deep appreciation for his presence. “He is our PM, our proud leader. India is now among the world’s top economies. His visit and affection toward this country means a lot,” said another attendee.
Jagannath, Chief Operating Officer of SBI in Male, shared that meeting PM Modi was a moment of pride. “It’s an opportunity we may not have had in India.”
Many community members highlighted how Modi’s visit signaled a reset in India-Maldives relations. “The business community stands to benefit. The trade agreement is a huge help to the Maldivian economy. India has once again shown it’s a true friend,” another Indian resident said.
The Prime Minister received a rousing reception from the diaspora upon his arrival on Friday. Chants of “Modi, Modi” and “Narendra Modi zindabad” echoed as he greeted the crowd while inaugurating the new Ministry of Defence building alongside Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu.
