Indian envoy, Canadian minister discuss boosting economic cooperation ahead of trade mission

Strengthening economic cooperation between India and Canada took center stage during a meeting between Indian Acting Consul General in Toronto, Kapidhwaja Pratap Singh, and Canadian Minister of Economic Development, Victor Fedeli. The discussion focused on new avenues of collaboration ahead of Fedeli’s upcoming trade mission to India.

According to the Consulate General of India in Toronto, the meeting reflected “renewed and forward-looking cooperation” in India–Canada relations, particularly in the context of the India–Ontario economic corridor. Both sides emphasized opportunities in emerging sectors, including technology, clean energy, healthcare, and life sciences.

Minister Fedeli shared his optimism on social media, posting, “It was great to meet with Acting Consul General Kapidhwaja Pratap Singh ahead of our trade mission to India. We discussed shared strengths and opportunities to deepen partnerships in key industries.”

The engagement comes amid broader diplomatic efforts to rebuild momentum in India–Canada relations. Earlier this month, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand met India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi to chart a “New Roadmap” for bilateral cooperation.

The joint statement released after their meeting underlined mutual respect for democratic values, the rule of law, and national sovereignty. It also acknowledged the importance of stable India–Canada ties amid global economic uncertainty and shifting geopolitical alignments.

Bilateral trade between the two countries reached USD 23.66 billion in 2024, with significant investments and business expansion on both sides. Officials said the renewed partnership aims to strengthen supply chains, drive innovation, and enhance resilience against global disruptions.
