Indian envoy Vinay Kwatra engages US lawmakers to boost trade, energy cooperation
India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, has intensified outreach with American lawmakers to reinforce the growing strategic, trade, and energy partnership between New Delhi and Washington.
On Friday, Kwatra met Congressman Rudy Yakym to discuss India-US bilateral ties, emphasizing trade cooperation and expanding energy collaboration. “Had a productive conversation with Representative Rudy Yakym on India-US bilateral ties. Exchanged notes on our trade cooperation and the growing energy partnership with the US, which is integral for India’s energy security,” the envoy posted on X.
In recent days, Kwatra also met with Congressman Blake Moore, Vice Chair of the House Republican Conference, to exchange views on India’s trade imperatives. He later held discussions with Representative Mike Kelly, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Taxation, focusing on economic relations and India’s increasing hydrocarbon purchases from the US.
Additionally, Kwatra met Representative Carol Miller, Chair of the Congressional Energy Export Caucus, briefing her on India’s energy security outlook and hydrocarbon imports. He underlined India’s consistent support for dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the Ukraine conflict, including through the Alaska Summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Earlier this week, Kwatra held talks with Representative Gregory Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, who reaffirmed Congress’ commitment to the India-US partnership and raised concerns over Trump’s tariff hikes on Indian imports.
On August 27, President Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent, citing India’s continued purchases of discounted Russian oil. India strongly criticized the move, calling it “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.”
The flurry of diplomatic engagements highlights India’s efforts to safeguard its trade interests while deepening energy security cooperation with the US, amid shifting global geopolitical dynamics.
