IndiGo flight makes emergency landing in Bengaluru

Just days after a tragic Air India crash claimed over 270 lives, another aviation scare emerged as an IndiGo flight with 168 passengers onboard made an emergency landing at Bengaluru International Airport following a ‘Fuel Mayday’ call.

The incident, which occurred on June 19 but surfaced only recently, involved IndiGo flight 6E-6764. The aircraft had taken off from Guwahati and was en route to Chennai. However, due to heavy air traffic congestion at Chennai, it was rerouted to Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru.

An IndiGo spokesperson confirmed to IANS that the pilot issued a ‘Fuel Mayday’ — a distress signal indicating that the aircraft was critically low on fuel and required immediate landing. “This is standard protocol under such circumstances,” the spokesperson said.

The Air Traffic Control (ATC) responded swiftly, prioritizing the flight for landing and initiating emergency procedures. Fire and medical teams were placed on standby as the plane touched down safely at 8:20 p.m.

Passengers onboard were reportedly shaken, especially in light of the recent Air India disaster. However, all 168 individuals, including crew, were safe.

Sources added that the aircraft later resumed its journey to Chennai with a new crew.

While no official statement has been released by IndiGo, aviation authorities are expected to review the incident closely. The close timing of this emergency and the Air India crash has raised serious concerns about air traffic management and in-flight emergency protocols.
