Iran’s president urges broader cooperation with Iraq across all sectors

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for expanding cooperation with Iraq “across all sectors,” underscoring the deep and strategic nature of Tehran–Baghdad ties. According to a statement from the Iranian president’s office, Pezeshkian made the remarks on Tuesday during a meeting in Tehran with Iraq’s National Security Advisor, Qasim al-Araji.

Describing the bilateral relationship as “excellent,” Pezeshkian emphasized that closer collaboration would strengthen the two countries’ security, economic, scientific, and cultural relations, benefiting not only Iran and Iraq but also the broader Muslim world. He said regular diplomatic exchanges could help enhance mutual understanding and create a more coordinated regional approach to shared challenges.

Al-Araji, in turn, reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to the 2023 bilateral security agreement, noting that Iraq’s security is “closely linked” to Iran’s. He pledged that Baghdad would not allow any threats to emerge from its borders against Iran.

During his visit to Tehran, Al-Araji also met with senior Iranian officials, including Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, and IRGC Chief Commander Mohammad Pakpour, to discuss regional stability and border cooperation.

The two nations signed a joint security agreement in August 2025 to enhance coordination along their shared borders. The memorandum of understanding was signed by Larijani and Al-Araji, further solidifying their mutual commitment to regional peace and cooperation.

Both Tehran and Baghdad have reiterated their intention to deepen ties in trade, energy, and security, with leaders on both sides framing the partnership as essential for long-term regional stability.
