Iranian president vows to strengthen ties with Azerbaijan

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed his country’s commitment to strengthening all-round relations with Azerbaijan.

During a meeting on Monday with Hikmat Hajiyev, assistant to the Azerbaijani president and head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, Pezeshkian highlighted Iran’s interest in expanding ties with Azerbaijan across economic, political, cultural, defense, and security sectors. He also called for the swift resolution of obstacles in trade and transportation cooperation, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Iranian president reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to maintaining the territorial integrity of regional countries, stressing that any changes to regional borders were unacceptable to Tehran.

He warned that certain foreign powers were creating divisions, making it essential for regional countries to strengthen unity and solidarity.

Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s desire to foster closer ties and synergy among Muslim nations, stating, “We seek to expand relations with neighboring and Muslim countries, as we believe that any divisions among Muslims provide opportunities for external interference and discord.”

Hajiyev, in response, reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s commitment to deepening relations with Iran. He noted that conditions were now favorable for strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Hajiyev’s visit to Iran, scheduled for two days, was made at the invitation of Mehdi Sanaei, senior political aide to the Iranian president and deputy for political affairs in the presidential office.
