Israel appoints David Zini as new Shin Bet chief amid controversy

The Israeli government has approved David Zini, a former senior army officer, as the new head of the Shin Bet domestic security agency for a five-year term. Zini will officially take office on October 5, the Prime Minister’s Office announced.

Zini has held multiple senior operational posts in the Israeli army and is known for his far-right views. Israeli media reports indicate he opposes the Gaza ceasefire-hostage deal and supports what he calls an “eternal war.” His appointment has drawn criticism from opposition parties and the public, who express concern that Zini could influence ongoing investigations into Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s close advisers for alleged private business ties with Qatar.

Netanyahu, facing multiple criminal trials including bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, has also raised concerns that a Shin Bet chief appointed by him could interfere with court proceedings under the guise of national security matters.

Zini will succeed Ronen Bar, who led Shin Bet during the Hamas-led surprise attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, and was widely criticized for perceived security lapses. Bar was dismissed in March over Netanyahu’s “lack of trust,” despite opposition from the Attorney General’s Office. The High Court temporarily froze his dismissal, but Bar resigned in mid-June, with the Deputy Chief serving as interim head.

Following Zini’s appointment, Netanyahu said, “The reality after October 7 requires a new Shin Bet chief who comes from outside the organisation. Major General Zini’s critical thinking, operational experience, and ability to adapt the system to changing realities make him the most suitable person to lead the Shin Bet at this time.”
