Israel weighing US-brokered Gaza ceasefire proposal tied to hostage release

Israel is “seriously considering” a new US ceasefire proposal in Gaza that links halting military operations with the release of Israeli hostages, an Israeli official confirmed on Sunday.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the plan was delivered to Hamas over the weekend and described it as “President Donald Trump’s proposal.” According to Israel’s Channel 12, the deal would cancel Israel’s offensive to capture Gaza City in return for the release of all 48 remaining hostages, including around 20 believed to be alive, on the first day of the truce. In exchange, thousands of Palestinian prisoners would be freed.

The framework also envisions Trump mediating negotiations to end the war, with the ceasefire maintained while talks continue.

In response, Hamas said it had received several US proposals and expressed readiness to “immediately sit at the negotiating table” in exchange for a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the establishment of a new governing committee made up of independent Palestinians.

Meanwhile, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, representing relatives of captives, urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to endorse the emerging agreement. “We call on the Israeli government to announce its unconditional support,” the group stated.

Trump also took to Truth Social, declaring: “The Israelis have accepted my terms. It is time for Hamas to accept as well.” He warned that rejection of the proposal would bring consequences.

Israel resumed military operations in Gaza on March 18. According to Gaza health officials, at least 64,455 Palestinians have been killed and 162,776 injured since October 2023, including 11,911 deaths and over 50,000 wounded since March.
