Israeli strike won’t derail Gaza mediation, says Qatari PM
Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani said Sunday that Israel’s unprecedented strike on Doha will not halt Qatar’s role in brokering peace for Gaza.
According to Qatar News Agency, Al-Thani made the remarks during a preparatory meeting with Arab and Islamic foreign ministers ahead of an emergency summit convened to address the Israeli attack. The ministers reviewed a draft statement condemning the strike and reaffirming support for Palestinian rights.
The Israeli airstrike, carried out last Tuesday, targeted a residential building in Doha that housed senior Hamas leaders engaged in ceasefire talks with mediators from the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt. The attack killed five Hamas members and a Qatari security officer, while several negotiators survived.
Israel launched the strike a day after Hamas’ military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, claimed responsibility for a shooting near Jerusalem that killed six people. The escalation has further complicated already fragile negotiations over a U.S.-backed truce plan.
In an interview with CNN, Al-Thani denounced the strike as “state terror,” saying Qatar felt “betrayed” by Israel’s actions. “We are enraged by such an act. This is state terror,” he said, adding that Doha remains committed to seeking an end to the war.
Qatar has long played a central role in mediation between Israel and Hamas, leveraging its ties to both Western allies and Palestinian factions. Despite the attack, officials said Doha, along with Egypt and Washington, will push forward with talks aimed at halting the fighting and paving the way toward a sustainable peace framework.
Al-Thani emphasized that no lasting peace or security in the region is possible without ensuring the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights.
