EAM Jaishankar, Canadian foreign minister Anita Anand discuss bilateral ties

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held his first official phone call with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand to discuss the future of India-Canada relations and areas of mutual cooperation.

Anand shared details of the conversation on X, calling it a “productive discussion” focused on strengthening ties, deepening economic cooperation, and pursuing shared priorities. Jaishankar confirmed the call, saying he appreciated the conversation and wished Anand success in her new role.

The discussion comes as Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney seeks to reset relations with India, which deteriorated under former PM Justin Trudeau after unsubstantiated allegations about India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023.

Anand, a 58-year-old Indian-origin lawmaker, took over the foreign affairs portfolio earlier this month. Previously, she served as Minister of Innovation and Defence.

India and Canada are looking to rebuild relations ahead of the upcoming G7 Summit, which Canada will host from June 15 to 17.
