
Jaishankar, Canadian FM meet in Munich; highlight growing momentum in India–Canada ties
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany, marking their fifth meeting since September 2025 and signaling steady progress in bilateral relations.
According to an official statement from the Government of Canada, the two leaders reviewed cooperation across energy, technology, and trade, emphasizing the expanding scope of engagement between the two democracies. The meeting reflects renewed diplomatic momentum, building on more than 75 years of formal ties and strong people-to-people connections.
The Canadian government highlighted India’s growing global influence, describing it as one of the world’s most dynamic and fast-growing economies. Both ministers acknowledged shared technological opportunities and discussed strengthening collaboration for businesses, industries, and workers in both countries.
The discussions also focused on progress under the joint road map for Canada–India relations announced in October 2025. Both sides reiterated their commitment to implementing priority areas under the framework while expanding and diversifying trade to enhance economic resilience and stability.
Canada’s Foreign Policy account on X described the meeting as productive, noting discussions on advancing shared interests. Jaishankar also posted positively about the engagement, describing it as an opportunity to review the steady advancement of bilateral ties.
The diplomatic engagement comes ahead of an anticipated visit to India by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in early March. India’s High Commissioner to Canada has indicated that agreements related to uranium, energy, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence may be signed during the visit, potentially adding new strategic dimensions to the partnership.
