
Jaishankar engages with global counterparts at UNGA, strengthens India’s diplomatic outreach
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar used the high-level United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session to deepen India’s diplomatic engagements, holding meetings with nearly a dozen foreign ministers and global leaders.
On Tuesday, Jaishankar discussed a broad agenda, from development and bilateral cooperation to Europe’s strategic outlook and the Ukraine conflict. He also convened the high-level meeting of the Like-Minded Global South Countries, underlining India’s leadership role among emerging nations.
Strengthening India–EU ties, Jaishankar met Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, who holds the EU presidency, and valued his insights on European affairs and the Ukraine crisis. With Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel, discussions focused on Europe’s strategic positioning and India’s global approach.
In South Asia, he reaffirmed close cooperation with Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and assured Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel of India’s steadfast support for Maldivian development. Talks with Mauritius Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ritish Ramful centered on follow-up to Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam’s recent visit to India.
Expanding ties in the Caribbean and Africa, Jaishankar engaged with Jamaica’s Kamina J. Smith, Suriname’s Melvin Bouva, Somalia’s Abdisalam Ali, Lesotho’s Lejone Mpotjoana, and St. Lucia’s Alva Baptiste. He also had a brief exchange with Singapore’s Vivian Balakrishnan.
Beyond government leaders, Jaishankar met Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, CEO of DP World, to review global economic trends and connectivity projects, including the company’s $510 million terminal at Tuna Tekra, Gujarat.
The series of meetings reinforced India’s role as a bridge between regions and a leading voice for the Global South.
