Kushner, special envoy Witkoff to lead US delegation in meeting with Putin
US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steven Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner will represent the United States during a high-stakes meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed.
According to Peskov, the Russian-American discussion is scheduled to begin after 5:00 PM Moscow time. “Putin will meet with Mr. Witkoff, the chief American negotiator on Ukrainian affairs. Kushner will also be present. A conversation will take place,” Peskov told Russian state media TASS.
When asked if other US officials would join the meeting, Peskov said, “No, there will be no more [American representatives]. Just a translator.”
The central agenda of the meeting will be the ongoing Ukraine crisis and US proposals aimed at resolving it. Two weeks ago, the United States unveiled a 28-point peace plan for Ukraine, prompting diplomatic discussions involving the US, Ukraine, and several European countries in Geneva on November 23.
Prior to the Kremlin meeting, Witkoff and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with a Ukrainian delegation in Hallandale Beach, Florida, on Sunday to advance the peace process.
Russian President Putin, speaking at a press conference in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on November 27, said the US-proposed plan could serve as a foundation for future agreements. “It would be impolite of me to talk about any final options now, since there are none. But some things are fundamental,” Putin said.
Putin emphasized that the US has partially considered Russia’s position, discussed before and after his August meeting with Trump in Alaska. “Somewhere we definitely need to sit down and seriously discuss specific points. We need to put everything into diplomatic language,” he added. He dismissed concerns that Russia intends to attack Europe, calling such claims “ridiculous.”
The Kremlin confirmed that the 28-point peace plan has been formally communicated to Russia. Following the Geneva discussions, the US-led plan has been condensed to 19 points, though the details have not been publicly released. This represents the latest step in ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in Ukraine.
As the international community watches closely, Tuesday’s meeting between Putin, Kushner, and Witkoff could prove pivotal in shaping the next phase of negotiations, with the potential to influence regional stability and US-Russia relations.
