La Liga: Barcelona rise to second; Atletico stumble again
FC Barcelona climbed to second place in La Liga with a convincing 3-0 home win over Getafe on Sunday. Ferran Torres scored twice, assisted by Marcus Rashford and Dani Olmo, before Olmo added the third from another Rashford setup. Getafe struggled with just 28% possession.
Atletico Madrid dropped more points after a 1-1 draw at Mallorca. Julian Alvarez missed a penalty, Conor Gallagher scored for Mallorca, and Vedat Muriqi equalized late as Atletico, down to 10 men following Alexander Sorloth’s red card, were denied victory. The result leaves Atletico seven points behind Barcelona and nine behind leaders Real Madrid, who maintained a perfect start with a 2-0 win over Espanyol.
Elsewhere, Rayo Vallecano drew 1-1 with Celta Vigo, Elche beat Real Oviedo 1-0 to rise to fifth, and Sevilla defeated Alaves 2-1. Levante cruised to a 4-0 win at Girona, while Valencia overcame Athletic Bilbao 2-0. Osasuna lost 2-1 to Villarreal despite leading and going down to 10 men.
Barcelona now sit just behind Real Madrid as the title race heats up.
