Lankan President expresses solidarity with India, condemns Pahalgam terror attack

Sri Lankan President Anura Dissanayake on Friday reached out to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, offering his condolences over the tragic Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians. He strongly condemned the heinous act and reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s unwavering support in the fight against terrorism.

Dissanayake expressed his shock at the brutal attack, stating, “Deeply shocked by the terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 innocent lives. Just spoke with PM Narendra Modi to convey Sri Lanka’s solidarity and our shared commitment against terrorism. Our hearts go out to the victims’ families. We stand with India in these difficult times.” He shared this message on the social media platform X after the phone call.

In addition to the Sri Lankan President, leaders from around the world have shown support for India in the aftermath of the attack. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof both called PM Modi, expressing their condolences and condemning terrorism.

A statement from 10 Downing Street noted, “The Prime Minister spoke to PM Modi this morning. He expressed his horror over the devastating terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which saw the tragic loss of 26 innocent lives. He offered deep condolences on behalf of the British people and reiterated his commitment to India in combating terrorism.”

Similarly, Dutch Prime Minister Schoof expressed strong condemnation, stating, “The Netherlands stands shoulder to shoulder with India in the fight against terrorism, now and in the future.”

Earlier, leaders from countries such as France, Israel, Italy, Jordan, and Japan also reached out to PM Modi, expressing solidarity and condemning the attack. French President Emmanuel Macron, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and others highlighted their unwavering support for India during these trying times.

The Pahalgam terror attack, which occurred on Tuesday, involved four heavily armed terrorists, two of whom were from Pakistan. The attack took place in the Baisaran Valley, where the terrorists indiscriminately opened fire on tourists, resulting in the tragic deaths of several individuals and leaving others critically injured. This assault has been described as one of the most brutal in the region in recent years.

Intelligence reports confirm that the attack was carried out by Pakistan-based terror group The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba.

In response, India has taken a series of retaliatory diplomatic and strategic actions, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, expulsion of Pakistani military attaches, the closure of the Attari-Wagah border, and the cancellation of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals. These actions underscore India’s determination to hold Pakistan accountable for its role in supporting terrorism.
