
Eminent economist Lord Meghnad Desai passes away at 85

Lord Meghnad Desai, renowned economist and UK House of Lords member, passed away at 85. Born in Vadodara in 1940, Desai had a distinguished academic career, teaching at the London School of Economics from 1965 to 2003. He was elevated to the House of Lords in 1991 and later founded the Meghnad Desai Academy of Economics in Mumbai.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief, remembering Desai as a “distinguished thinker” who deepened India-UK ties. A prolific writer, Desai authored several books including Marx’s Revenge and The Rediscovery of India.
He was known for his independent views and contributions to global economics and governance.
