Macron urges G7 action on Iran, Israel, and Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron led key discussions at the G7 Summit in Canada on Tuesday, urging world leaders to support a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, revive the stalled Iran nuclear deal, and work toward peace in Ukraine and Gaza.

Meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Macron stressed that only renewed negotiations could prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and ensure long-term regional stability.

The G7 joint statement backed Israel’s right to defend itself and labeled Iran as the “principal source” of regional instability and terrorism. However, Macron emphasized the importance of restraint and dialogue, advocating a balanced approach that includes relief for civilians in Gaza and pressure on Hamas to release hostages.

Macron and Trump also discussed reviving U.S.-France trade relations, while his meeting with Starmer centered on Middle East tensions and a lasting peace in Ukraine. Macron reiterated that peace efforts must involve a political solution and immediate ceasefire.

On social media, Macron posted: “A ceasefire for Ukraine. A ceasefire to end the war in Gaza. De-escalation and the resumption of negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.”

The French President also met Canadian PM Mark Carney, thanking him for hosting the summit and reaffirming commitments to collaboration on defense, AI, and climate goals.

Later, Macron held talks with Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba, underlining the strategic Franco-Japanese alliance spanning defense, critical materials, civil nuclear energy, and culture.

As France prepares to take over the G7 presidency next year, Macron’s engagements signal a proactive diplomatic stance to confront global crises through multilateral cooperation.
