Marsh stresses squad depth after Australia’s dominant T20 win over West Indies
Australia captain Mitchell Marsh underlined the importance of squad depth after his team’s commanding eight-wicket win over West Indies in the second T20I at Sabina Park. With senior pacers Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood rested following the Test series sweep, Australia fielded a younger bowling unit that rose to the challenge.
Ben Dwarshuis and Nathan Ellis led the pace attack, while spin duo Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa starred, sharing five wickets on a pitch favoring turn. “We know those guys can’t play every format all the time,” Marsh said of the regular fast bowlers. “It’s vital to build depth and help new players transition into international cricket smoothly.”
Despite Marsh and Maxwell falling early, Australia’s chase of the 173-run target was anchored by a brilliant 131-run partnership between Josh Inglis and Cameron Green – Australia’s highest for the third wicket in T20Is. The duo finished the job with 28 balls remaining, showcasing the team’s growing bench strength.
Praising Green’s comeback to the T20 side after a long Test stint, Marsh said, “He’s a key player for us. He hasn’t played much T20 for Australia but fits right in.” He also lauded Inglis for his dominant batting. “When he’s in that mood, not many bowlers can stop him.”
However, Marsh admitted there’s still work to do, especially in fielding. “We dropped four catches today, and that’s an area we must improve,” he noted.
With a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, Australia looks set to continue testing their bench while maintaining dominance over the hosts.
