‘I imagined playing for United on Brazil’s gravel pitches’: Matheus Cunha on dream move

Manchester United’s latest signing, Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha, described his move to Old Trafford as a “dream come true,” recalling how he once imagined donning the Red Devils’ shirt while playing on gravel pitches back in Brazil.

Speaking on Jio Hotstar, Cunha shared emotional childhood memories: “We could only watch the Premier League at my grandma’s house since no one else had the channel. My cousin, who supported Manchester United, introduced me to the club. Even on those gravel pitches, I’d picture myself playing for United.”

The 26-year-old completed a permanent move from Wolves to Manchester United last month for a reported £62.5 million – a club-record fee. He signed a five-year deal with an option for an additional year. Cunha joins United after a standout spell at Wolves, where he scored 33 goals in 92 appearances and was named the club’s Player of the Season.

His 2023–24 season saw memorable moments, including a sensational FA Cup goal against West Brom and a historic Premier League hat-trick at Chelsea. He ended the season as Wolves’ top scorer with 17 goals, six of which were nominated for the Goal of the Season, including an Olimpico against United.

Cunha also opened up about his inspirations growing up: “Wayne Rooney was my idol. I admired how he gave everything on the pitch, his leadership in the number 10 shirt. I also looked up to Ronaldo, Giggs, and Van der Sar. That United team shaped my love for football.”

Cunha now begins a new chapter at Old Trafford, eager to fulfill the dream that began in the dusty fields of Brazil.
