Mojtaba Khamenei injured in Tehran strike that killed father Ali Khamenei

Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was reportedly wounded in the strike that killed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during the opening phase of the ongoing military campaign against Iran, according to a media report.

The revelation came from Iran’s ambassador to Cyprus, Alireza Salarian, who told The Guardian that Mojtaba Khamenei sustained injuries when the attack struck the presidential complex in Tehran on February 28.

“He was also there and he was injured in that bombardment but I haven’t seen that reflected in the foreign news,” the diplomat said.

Salarian said Mojtaba Khamenei suffered injuries to his legs, hand, and arm during the attack and is believed to be receiving medical treatment. According to the ambassador, the injuries explain why the new Supreme Leader has not yet appeared in public or addressed the nation since the conflict began.

“I have heard that he was injured in his legs and hand and arm… I think he is in the hospital because he is injured,” Salarian said, adding that Khamenei is not currently in a condition to deliver a public speech.

The strike that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reportedly occurred on the 10th day of Ramadan while he was with members of his family inside a residence located near the presidential office complex in Tehran.

According to the ambassador, several family members were killed in the attack, including the late Supreme Leader’s wife, daughter, son-in-law, and his daughter’s 14-month-old child.

Top Iranian military commanders who had gathered at the location were also reportedly killed in the strike.

The death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had led Iran since 1989, marked a major turning point in the country’s political and religious leadership. Following his death, Mojtaba Khamenei — long considered a powerful figure within Iran’s clerical establishment — was elevated to the position of Supreme Leader.

However, Western intelligence officials reportedly believe Mojtaba Khamenei has remained out of public view partly due to security concerns and fears of potential assassination attempts.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has publicly criticised Iran’s decision to elevate Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump said he was “not happy” with Iran’s choice and suggested the new leader may not be able to “live in peace” amid ongoing tensions.

The leadership transition comes as Iran remains locked in an escalating conflict in the region, with military strikes and retaliatory attacks continuing across multiple fronts.
