Myanmar hosts 7th tourism ministers’ meeting in Yangon

Myanmar hosted the 7th Tourism Ministers’ meeting of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam (CLMV) in Yangon on Friday. The meeting focused on strengthening regional tourism ties through joint initiatives such as creating a unified CLMV tourism website, coordinating international tourism events, and launching cost-effective digital marketing campaigns via social media platforms. The ministers also discussed increasing participation in global tourism fairs and exhibitions to promote the region’s tourism offerings.

Myanmar’s Union Minister for Hotels and Tourism, Thet Thet Khine, urged the CLMV countries to deepen their tourism cooperation to boost the regional economy and attract more international visitors. The ministers acknowledged the impressive recovery in tourist arrivals, with a notable rise from 7.5 million visitors in 2022 to 22.8 million in 2023. Preliminary figures for 2024 indicate continued growth, with 21.3 million visitors recorded from January to September.

The meeting also highlighted the potential for sustainable tourism growth and the need for infrastructure development to accommodate increasing numbers of international tourists. As part of the discussions, the ministers emphasized promoting local cultures, heritage, and eco-tourism as key attractions for travelers.

Looking ahead, the 8th CLMV Tourism Ministers’ meeting is set to take place in Vietnam in 2026, where further steps will be taken to advance the region’s tourism collaboration.
