National Guard deployed in Los Angeles amid immigration raid protests

Tensions flared in downtown Los Angeles as more than 200 protesters clashed with National Guard troops during demonstrations against immigration raids carried out across California.

Witnesses reported that tear gas and smoke grenades were used by National Guard soldiers, alongside agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security, to disperse crowds. Protesters and journalists were among those injured.

“This was meant to be a peaceful protest. Instead, we’re met with troops and force. Is that necessary?” said one demonstrator.

California Governor Gavin Newsom urged calm, warning, “Don’t give Donald Trump what he wants. Speak up, but stay peaceful.” He criticized the president’s unprecedented move to activate the state’s National Guard without the governor’s request — the first such action since 1965.

Footage aired by ABC 7 showed troops positioned near City Hall, Compton, and Paramount. The federal deployment came after ICE raids across Southern California on Friday resulted in over 100 arrests, sparking widespread protests and violent confrontations.

Critics, including Governor Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, condemned Trump’s decision. “The LAPD could handle this. Bringing in the National Guard only escalates tensions,” Bass said.

Newsom accused the former president of trying to provoke violence. “Trump wants a show of force. He’s igniting conflict for political gain,” he stated in a fundraising message.

Federal officials indicated more raids would continue, despite growing opposition from local leaders and residents.
