Nepali leaders seek stronger India ties

Political leaders, lawmakers, and experts in Nepal are calling for a broader role in strengthening ties with India, especially following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

At a Monday event organized by the Institute for Public Policy and Partnership in Kathmandu, former minister and Nepali Congress leader Minendra Rijal emphasized the need to deepen the relationship. He noted that with India facing regional challenges, Nepal must seize the opportunity to engage more meaningfully.

Rijal stressed the importance of candid dialogue and moving beyond token sociocultural ties. “No one can substitute Nepal-India relations,” he said, adding that Nepali leaders must act in the national interest.

Former foreign minister NP Saud echoed these sentiments, stating that perfect diplomatic balance is unrealistic and that Nepal must adapt its foreign policy in light of evolving global dynamics.

Meanwhile, former BJP foreign cell in-charge Vijaya Jolly urged Nepal to support India’s anti-terrorism efforts. He reiterated the unique bond between the nations, citing shared borders, cultural ties, and close security cooperation.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs highlights Nepal as a priority under its “Neighbourhood First” policy, with ongoing high-level visits and collaboration across defense, trade, and development.
