Indian diaspora upbeat ahead of PM Modi’s Canada visit

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Canada for the G7 Summit, the Indian diaspora is expressing overwhelming excitement and hope. Many see the visit as a critical opportunity to reset strained Indo-Canadian relations and usher in a new era of cooperation.

PM Modi will attend the G7 Summit in Kananaskis at the invitation of newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, marking his first visit to Canada in nearly a decade. This visit follows a period of diplomatic tension between the two nations and is being hailed by the Indian community as a sign of renewed goodwill.

“This is a moment of great joy,” said Shilpi, an Indo-Canadian resident. “It feels like our own is coming home. This visit will strengthen ties and improve trade and security for our communities.”

Kajal, another community member, echoed the excitement: “It’s a big deal that PM Modi has been invited and has accepted. It’s a strong signal that both countries want to improve relations. Under his leadership, India has become the fourth-largest economy—it’s a source of pride for all of us.”

Tripti Soni added, “As an Indo-Canadian, this visit fills us with pride. We hope this marks a turning point for better relations between India and Canada.”

Tensions peaked in 2023 after former PM Justin Trudeau made unverified allegations against India, which New Delhi strongly denied. India, in turn, accused Canada of harboring extremist elements and failing to act against threats to Indian diplomats.

With Modi’s visit and new leadership in Ottawa, both sides now seem committed to reconciliation and a positive diplomatic reset.
