PM Modi visits Cyprus ceasefire line, deepens bilateral ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a historic visit to Cyprus by touring the ceasefire line in Nicosia with President Nikos Christodoulides, where signs of the Turkish occupation remain starkly visible. This symbolic walk underscored India’s solidarity with Cyprus and its stance on regional sovereignty and peace.

Sharing photos of the visit, the Cyprus government posted on X, “Tour with the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi along the ceasefire line, in old Nicosia. Where the signs of the Turkish occupation remain visible.”

PM Modi’s first visit to Cyprus in over two decades comes amid ongoing tensions between India and Turkey, especially over Ankara’s support to Pakistan and recognition of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the tour through Nicosia’s historic district as a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Cypriot people. “Gratitude to President Christodoulides for showing me parts of the very historic city of Nicosia,” Modi posted on X, reaffirming India’s commitment to deepen ties.

During the visit, Cyprus conferred its highest civilian honour — the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III — upon PM Modi, marking his 23rd international award. Several bilateral agreements were signed, enhancing cooperation in trade, defence, tourism, and technology.

President Christodoulides welcomed Modi warmly, stating, “Your visit reflects the political will to strengthen our bilateral relationship. Cyprus is a reliable ally for India in the Mediterranean and the EU.”

The leaders also reaffirmed shared positions on combating terrorism and expanding India-EU cooperation, especially with Cyprus assuming EU Council presidency in 2026.
