Cyprus welcomes PM Modi with ‘Vande Mataram’ in historic visit after two decades

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm and symbolic welcome in Cyprus on Sunday, becoming the first Indian PM to visit the Mediterranean nation in over 20 years. The historic arrival was marked by chants of “Vande Mataram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” from the Indian diaspora, as Cyprus rolled out ceremonial honours at Larnaca International Airport.

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides personally received PM Modi, signaling a renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral ties across trade, technology, education, and culture. A notable placard at the event read, “Jai Hind, Operation Sindoor, Justice is Served,” reflecting pride over India’s recent counterterrorism action.

PM Modi shared moments from the welcome on his official X account, describing it as a “memorable beginning to a meaningful journey.”

During his two-day visit, the Prime Minister will attend a business roundtable in Limassol, hold talks with President Christodoulides, and be conferred with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III — Cyprus’s highest civilian award.

The visit is seen as a strategic step to boost ties with Europe ahead of Cyprus assuming the EU Council presidency in 2026. It also reaffirms Cyprus’s consistent support for India’s global stance, in contrast to Turkey’s criticism of India’s domestic matters.

Cyprus’s recent move to open a Eurobank office in Mumbai reflects efforts to enhance financial connectivity with South Asia. Leaders are expected to discuss collaboration in renewable energy, digital innovation, infrastructure, and higher education.

From Cyprus, PM Modi will head to the G7 Summit in Canada, followed by a state visit to Croatia, aiming to expand India’s global partnerships and advocate for counterterrorism efforts worldwide.
