PM Modi matches Congress PMs’ 70-year record of foreign Parliament speeches

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached a landmark in India’s diplomatic history by delivering his 17th address to a foreign Parliament, equalling the total of all Congress Prime Ministers combined over 70 years.

The milestone was achieved during his recent tour of Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, and Namibia — part of a five-nation visit in early July 2025. It highlights Modi’s active global engagement and underscores India’s evolving leadership among Global South nations.

For comparison, previous Congress Prime Ministers delivered a total of 17 such speeches over decades: Manmohan Singh (7), Indira Gandhi (4), Jawaharlal Nehru (3), Rajiv Gandhi (2), and P.V. Narasimha Rao (1). Modi has matched this tally in just over a decade.

In Ghana, PM Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit in over 30 years and was honoured with the Order of the Star of Ghana. In Trinidad & Tobago, he addressed Parliament during the 180th anniversary of Indian arrival, reinforcing historical and developmental ties.

Namibia’s Parliament gave him a standing ovation, where he spoke on democratic values, digital cooperation, and health infrastructure. He also received the country’s highest civilian honour, Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis.

Since 2014, Modi has addressed parliaments in countries including Australia, the UK, the US, Fiji, Bhutan, Nepal, Afghanistan, Uganda, Maldives, Guyana, and Mauritius. His themes consistently focus on inclusive development, global reform, and climate action.

This unprecedented global parliamentary outreach reflects India’s rising stature. As the nation prepares to chair the BRICS summit in 2026, Modi’s diplomatic momentum signals a new chapter in India’s global influence.
