Nothing can justify terrorism, India stands with Israel firmly: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reaffirmed India’s unwavering support for Israel, declaring that “nothing can justify terrorism” during a historic address to the Knesset — the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister.

Speaking to Israeli lawmakers, Modi expressed solidarity with the people of Israel following the October 7 attack by Hamas. “I carry with me the deepest condolences of the people of India for every life lost and for every family whose world was shattered,” he said. “We feel your pain. We share your grief. India stands with Israel firmly, with full conviction, in this moment and beyond.”

Drawing parallels with India’s own experience, the Prime Minister noted that India has endured terrorism for decades. “No cause can justify the murder of civilians. Nothing can justify terrorism,” he asserted, receiving repeated applause from members of the Israeli Parliament.

Backing Gaza peace initiative

At the same time, Modi underlined the importance of pursuing peace. Referring to the Gaza Peace Initiative endorsed by the UN Security Council, he said it offers a pathway toward a just and durable resolution. “India has expressed its firm support for the initiative. We believe it holds the promise of peace for all the people in the region, including by addressing the Palestine issue,” he stated, urging that efforts be guided by “wisdom, courage and humanity.”

Modi said he was pleased to return to Israel, a country with which India shares deep historical and cultural ties. He highlighted that he was born on September 17, 1950 — the same day India formally recognised Israel — calling it a symbolic connection.

Shared history and values

In his speech, Modi described the Holocaust as one of humanity’s darkest chapters. He recalled how the Maharaja of Nawanagar in Gujarat offered refuge to Polish, including Jewish, children during World War II — an act he said exemplified India’s humanitarian tradition.

He also emphasised that Jewish communities have lived in India for centuries without persecution, preserving their faith while contributing fully to society.

Israeli leaders warmly welcomed the Prime Minister. Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana greeted him in Hindi and described him as one of the defining statesmen of the era.

The address underscored the strengthening India-Israel strategic partnership, spanning defence, innovation, agriculture and technology, even as both nations navigate complex regional challenges.
