PoK leader Shaukat Mir accuses Pakistan army of oppressing locals

Shaukat Nawaz Mir, a senior leader of the Awami Action Committee in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), has accused Pakistan’s government and army of oppressing locals, describing them as a “witch bent on killing people.” Mir claimed that the so-called “Azad Kashmir” is far from free and highlighted what he described as systematic atrocities against residents.

Mir recalled controversial remarks by Gen. Asim Munir, who reportedly labelled Hindus as “kaafir” before the Pahalgam attack, asserting that while Pakistan accuses others of human rights violations, its own forces are committing atrocities in PoK. He further alleged that ordinary voices are being silenced, the media suppressed, and Pakistani forces are killing those they claim to represent.

Protests in PoK have intensified, prompting the local administration to impose an indefinite lockdown. The Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC) has called for global attention to the situation, urging Kashmiris worldwide to raise awareness. The committee has submitted a 38-point charter of demands to the Pakistan government, including removal of perks for elites and an end to excessive use of force.

Security forces have reportedly opened fire on peaceful protesters, with allegations of a systematic attempt to suppress dissent. Mobile and internet services remain suspended in PoK, limiting communication and preventing information about the unrest from reaching the international community.

Mir warned that the situation could deteriorate further as Pakistan continues heavy-handed measures, including unprecedented deployment of security personnel across the region. The protests and government response highlight mounting tensions in PoK amid calls for justice and basic freedoms for the local population.
