President Murmu Highlights Indian Community’s Role in Algeria During Historic Visit
President Droupadi Murmu, on her historic visit to Algeria, emphasized the importance of the Indian community in promoting India’s interests and soft power. Speaking at the Indian Community Reception in Algiers, she noted the strong bond between India and Algeria, which has flourished since Algeria’s independence.
President Murmu praised the Indian community for their contributions to India’s growth, stating, “With the collective efforts of 1.4 billion Indians, we embark on a new journey of hope and aspirations.” She acknowledged that the goodwill of the Indian community, both in Algeria and abroad, is invaluable.
“The hardworking Indian community in Algeria serves as true ambassadors of our culture. Each of you embodies the spirit of India,” she said. Reflecting on the historical ties, she noted, “When Algeria gained independence in 1962, India was there to support and establish political relations, which have since grown significantly.”
The President highlighted India’s rapid economic growth, noting it as one of the fastest-growing major economies and the fifth-largest in the world. She was warmly welcomed upon her arrival, marking the first visit by an Indian President to Algeria.
Indian Ambassador to Algeria, Swati Kulkarni, echoed the sentiments, emphasizing the historical connection and mutual trust between the two nations. She described the visit as a reaffirmation of commitment to a vibrant partnership.
As part of her three-nation tour, President Murmu will also visit Mauritania and Malawi, engaging in discussions with local leaders and interacting with the Indian diaspora. Her itinerary includes paying respects at the Maqam Echahid monument, holding talks with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and addressing the Algeria-India Economic Forum.
In Mauritania, she will sign several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and address the Indian community, while her visit to Malawi will focus on youth affairs, sports, and cultural exchange.
President Murmu will conclude her tour and return to India on October 19.
