Putin hails Russian Navy as key to sovereignty, security

President Vladimir Putin on Sunday emphasized the strategic role of the Russian navy in protecting the nation’s sovereignty and security during large-scale military exercises marking Russia’s Navy Day.

Overseeing the ongoing “July Storm” drills, Putin declared, “Our primary task is to ensure Russia’s security and defend its sovereignty. The navy plays a crucial role in this mission.”

The high-profile maneuvers began on July 23 and span multiple strategic regions including the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, and the Caspian and Baltic Seas. According to the Defence Ministry, the exercise involves over 150 warships and support vessels, 120 aircraft, 10 coastal missile systems, 950 units of equipment, and more than 15,000 personnel.

Putin noted that the operations incorporate lessons from Russia’s ongoing military campaign in Ukraine. “We will continue enhancing the combat readiness of our naval forces by equipping surface ships, submarines, and aviation with the latest technologies,” he said.

The Russian leader also announced structural changes to bolster the navy’s capabilities. Five Marine Corps brigades will be upgraded into full divisions, with two to be completed this year, aimed at expanding strike power and effectiveness.

Due to security concerns, the traditional Main Naval Parade in St. Petersburg was canceled for the first time since 2017. Putin said it was more appropriate to demonstrate operational readiness in a live combat simulation rather than in ceremonial form.

Following the drills, Putin visited the Admiralty in St. Petersburg to personally commend naval personnel for their dedication and professionalism.

Russia’s Navy Day, celebrated since 1939, has evolved into a major national event, symbolizing the strength and historical significance of its maritime forces.
