Qatari PM meets Turkish FM to discuss cooperation, Gaza, and Syria developments

Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to discuss bilateral cooperation and the latest developments in the Gaza Strip and Syria.

According to a statement from Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, the two officials reviewed ways to strengthen bilateral ties and discussed developments in Gaza, the Palestinian territories, and Syria, along with other issues of mutual concern.

Emphasis on Gaza ceasefire

During the Sunday meeting, Al Thani highlighted the need for both parties involved in the Gaza conflict to implement the ceasefire agreement. He expressed appreciation for the strong Qatari-Turkish partnership in promoting peace and stability in the region.

In a joint press conference after the meeting, Al Thani stressed the importance of adhering to the agreement’s provisions and urged the commencement of negotiations on the second phase, as outlined in the ceasefire agreement.

“No party should be allowed to obstruct negotiations,” Al Thani emphasized, urging the international community to maintain pressure to ensure their success. He also stated, “The second phase must begin tomorrow, and we have already started engaging with both parties.”

Syria’s restructuring and sanctions relief

Al Thani also welcomed steps aimed at restructuring Syria and promoting consensus and unity among Syrian parties. He emphasized the need for civil peace, security, stability, and the establishment of a state based on law, institutions, and prosperity.

He further stressed the urgent need to lift sanctions imposed on Syria, as they negatively impact the humanitarian crisis and hinder the provision of basic needs.

Fidan’s stance on Syria and Palestine

Fidan echoed Al Thani’s call for the lifting of sanctions on Syria and emphasized the importance of ensuring security in the country.

Fidan also highlighted the issue of the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, calling it a violation of international law and urging the international community to stand against such actions.
