Rain Fury: 600 Families in Bengaluru Relocated for Safety
In response to severe rainfall that has inundated parts of Bengaluru, the Karnataka government has ordered the relocation of residents from several apartment complexes for eight days to ensure their safety.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced the decision, highlighting that some areas have experienced rainfall 300% above normal levels. “In Chowdeshwari Nagar, 150 mm of rain has been recorded,” he stated, noting that around 600 families from Kendriya Vidyalaya and Tata Nagar will be affected.
To assist with the situation, five teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed. Shivakumar mentioned that 20-25 HP machines are being used to clean drains and water is being pumped out from 20 locations.
He acknowledged the challenges faced, particularly in the western and southern parts of the city, where a tank has burst and several localities are affected. “Our teams are working tirelessly day and night,” he said.
In response to criticism about his lack of visits to affected areas, Shivakumar emphasized the importance of ongoing relief efforts over personal appearances. He revealed that he himself encountered significant flooding while returning from Challakere town.
Regarding the tragic incident involving two children swept away in a lake, he confirmed that search operations are underway, expressing empathy for the families affected.
