Rajnath Singh hails Indian Coast Guard as true force multiplier

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday described the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) as a true force multiplier, emphasizing its vital role in addressing evolving maritime security challenges across the Indian Ocean Region.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the 42nd ICG Commanders’ Conference at the headquarters in Delhi, Singh highlighted the force’s comprehensive responsibilities. “By patrolling the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the ICG deters external threats and counters illegal fishing, drug and arms trafficking, smuggling, human trafficking, marine pollution, and other irregular maritime activities,” he said.

The Defence Minister lauded the ICG’s professionalism, humanitarian efforts, and its seamless coordination with the Navy, state administrations, and other security agencies, calling this collaboration a key strength. “The ICG is no longer just a security provider — it is a true force multiplier,” Singh noted.

The three-day conference, running from September 28 to 30, gathers senior leadership to discuss strategic, operational, and administrative priorities. Singh underscored the ICG’s growth from a modest fleet to a formidable maritime force with 152 vessels and 78 aircraft, uniquely positioned at the intersection of external and internal security.

Rajnath Singh reaffirmed the government’s focus on modernizing the ICG, highlighting that nearly 90% of its capital budget is allocated to indigenous assets. He praised progress in domestic shipbuilding, repair, and maintenance, describing it as a milestone in Aatmanirbharta. “This enhances operational strength while boosting India’s shipbuilding sector and economy, ensuring security and self-reliance advance together,” he added.

The Defence Minister’s remarks reinforce the ICG’s critical status as a pillar of national security, reflecting India’s strategic focus on maritime vigilance, operational readiness, and indigenous capabilities.
