RG Kar Case: CBI Investigates Suspended Junior Doctor’s Movements on August 8-9
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is examining the whereabouts of a recently suspended junior doctor, Avik Dey, during the night of August 8, when the horrific rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital occurred. The investigation also extends to the following day.
Dey, who was suspended by the West Bengal Medical Council and the state health department, previously served as the resident medical officer (RMO) in the Radiodiagnosis Department at Burdwan Medical College & Hospital. He later enrolled in the surgery department at S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital in South Kolkata.
Reports indicate that Dey has connections to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar, who is currently imprisoned in connection with the case. A recent letter from the S.S.K.M. dean to the state health department has prompted CBI scrutiny of Dey’s activities on August 8. The letter highlighted behavioral irregularities and noted that Dey had been absent from duty since that date.
Dey, along with another suspended junior doctor, Birupaksha Biswas, faced extensive questioning by CBI officials at the agency’s Salt Lake office on September 21 and 22. Biswas, a former senior resident doctor in the Pathology Department at Burdwan Medical College, is also associated with Sandip Ghosh and has been suspended by the West Bengal Medical Council.
Both doctors are accused of using their connections with Ghosh and Trinamool Congress leaders to “threaten” and “harass” other junior doctors at their respective institutions. The S.S.K.M. dean’s letter further noted that Dey operated independently despite enrolling in postgraduate studies, failing to complete necessary registration processes or submit his research proposal summary.
The body of the woman doctor was discovered under suspicious circumstances in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on the morning of August 9.
