Russia says over 120 Ukrainian drones shot down overnight

Russian air defence forces intercepted and destroyed around 120 Ukrainian drones in a single night, the country’s Defence Ministry announced on Sunday.

In a statement, the ministry said the attacks occurred between 8:00 p.m. (1700 GMT) on August 9 and 6:10 a.m. Moscow time (0310 GMT) on August 10, involving 121 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles. Later the same day, between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., Russian forces downed an additional 34 drones, including one over the Moscow Region, according to Xinhua.

Saratov Region Governor Roman Busargin confirmed that one person was killed by falling drone debris.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia had launched 100 combat and decoy drones overnight, with Ukrainian air defences destroying 70 of them.

The overnight barrage follows earlier incidents, including an August 4 large-scale drone assault on the Volgograd Region, targeting transport and energy infrastructure. While there were no casualties in that attack, Volgograd Governor Andrey Bocharov said debris damaged a high-voltage power line, cutting electricity to Ilovlya and nearby areas. Repairs were carried out by emergency crews.

In the town of Frolovo, a fire broke out at a technical building in Archeda railway station, prompting temporary train service suspensions. An unexploded drone found on the tracks was safely neutralised by ordnance disposal teams.

The surge in drone warfare highlights the escalating scale and reach of unmanned aerial attacks in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, with both sides reporting intensified strikes in recent weeks.
