Serbia battles over 200 wildfires as heatwave sparks national emergency

Serbia is grappling with a surge of wildfires triggered by an intense heatwave and strong winds, prompting emergency declarations in several regions and the deployment of military forces.

The Ministry of the Interior confirmed over 200 wildfires in the past 24 hours, with one person dead and at least 14 injured. States of emergency have been declared in Kursumlija in the south and Bor in the east, two of the worst-hit areas.

The Serbian Armed Forces have joined firefighting efforts, deploying helicopters, water tankers, and specialized equipment to assist local firefighters and volunteers. While several fires have been contained, multiple hotspots remain active.

In Bor, wildfires are spreading across more than 100 hectares, including areas near the Krivelj settlement and Bor Lake. Emergency crews, including personnel from Chinese-operated Zijin Mining, are battling the flames in difficult conditions.

Twelve additional fires broke out Monday near Gornji Milanovac, damaging homes, vehicles, and farmlands. Other affected cities include Kragujevac, Prokuplje, Valjevo, and Nis.

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic reported 197 fires on Sunday alone and said “all available resources are engaged.” Citizens are being urged to avoid open flames and report any signs of fire to emergency number 193.

To limit further risk, the national electricity distributor has cut power in parts of western and southern Serbia. Burning dry vegetation or waste in open areas is now strictly prohibited and punishable by law.

Chinese companies have provided additional equipment and logistical support, reflecting deepening cooperation in disaster response.

“The situation remains critical,” said Luka Causic, head of Serbia’s emergency management sector. With continued hot, dry weather forecast, authorities are calling for public vigilance.
