Shigeru Ishiba Elected as Japan’s Prime Minister

Shigeru Ishiba, leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), has been elected as the country’s new Prime Minister following a parliamentary vote on Tuesday. He succeeds Fumio Kishida.

Both houses of the Japanese parliament approved Ishiba’s election after he won the LDP presidency last week. His confirmation paves the way for a general election set for October 27, despite opposition criticism regarding the timing, which led to a last-minute delay in the parliamentary vote.

Ishiba faces significant challenges ahead, particularly in restoring voter trust in the scandal-plagued LDP, local media report.

This marks Ishiba’s fifth attempt at LDP leadership, where he defeated Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi in a closely contested runoff, receiving 215 votes to Takaichi’s 194.

Earlier on Monday, Ishiba announced plans to dissolve the lower house of parliament on October 9, leading to the upcoming general election. His decision to call a snap election has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who labeled it “disrespectful” and “unconstitutional,” as he made the announcement before officially taking office.

Upon winning the LDP leadership, Ishiba emphasized the need for restoring trust and transparency within the party, focusing on humility, fairness, and rule adherence. In his post-victory speech, he committed to making Japan a safer and more stable nation, prioritizing national security in his administration.

At a press conference following his election, Ishiba highlighted the importance of public trust and government accountability.

Earlier in the day, outgoing Prime Minister Kishida announced the resignation of his entire Cabinet, stating, “Japan is facing a critical moment both at home and abroad. I sincerely hope that under the new Cabinet, important policies that will shape Japan’s future will be vigorously implemented. I ask for your continued support for the next Cabinet and the new Prime Minister.”
