Sikkim CM highlights major labour welfare steps on Labour Day
On the occasion of International Labour Day, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of labourers, highlighting several key initiatives aimed at improving their livelihoods and rights.
“Our government has always placed the welfare of labourers at the forefront of its development agenda,” CM Tamang said. “We’ve taken landmark steps to enhance their dignity, well-being, and livelihood.”
Among the major measures, the CM cited the revision of monthly wages to ₹15,000, improved housing, expanded health benefits, and increased financial assistance under the Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) scheme.
A major milestone, he noted, is the establishment of a 100-bedded ESIC Hospital at Mamring, Rangpo, which aims to provide accessible and quality healthcare to the working community.
To modernize labour governance, CM Tamang announced a cadre review and the rollout of tech-driven initiatives like an online registration app and a dedicated Labour Clearance Certificate Portal — both designed to enhance transparency and simplify administrative procedures.
He also emphasized the importance of mass registration of workers under the Sikkim Labour Registration Act, 2021, to safeguard their rights and ensure they benefit from government schemes.
Awareness programs on labour rights, employment conditions, and fair labour practices are being actively promoted to build a safer, more equitable work environment, the CM said.
“These initiatives reflect our unwavering commitment to the welfare of workers and to promoting a positive employer-employee relationship that supports sustainable development and social harmony,” he added.
Extending his greetings on International Labour Day, CM Tamang praised the efforts of labourers across Sikkim and the world.
“I extend my warm greetings and heartfelt appreciation to all hardworking labourers whose tireless efforts form the backbone of our society and economy,” he said. “Their contributions have shaped societies globally, and in Sikkim, their role in our growth story remains vital.”
