Spanish FM Announces €10 Million Donation to Lebanese Army

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares Bueno announced that Spain will provide a €10 million donation to the Lebanese Armed Forces to support stability and humanitarian efforts in Lebanon.

Bueno made the announcement following his meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at Baabda Palace in Beirut, the Lebanese capital, according to a statement from the Lebanese presidency.

The Spanish Foreign Minister stated that the donation will be allocated to paying salaries and providing logistical support to the Lebanese army. He also emphasized Spain’s continued support for Lebanon in ensuring stability, facilitating humanitarian responses, and participating in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

“Spain condemns all attacks against civilians and infrastructure and supports the deployment of the Lebanese army south of the Litani River for the safety of both Lebanese and Israeli citizens,” Bueno said.

The Spanish minister also reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to assist in Lebanon’s reconstruction following the country’s recent 14-month conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. As part of this ongoing support, Bueno extended an invitation to President Aoun to visit Spain.

Earlier in December, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez hosted Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati in Madrid to discuss Lebanon’s challenges and the broader situation in the Middle East.

The meeting between the two leaders took place shortly after a ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel and amid significant political developments in Syria, including the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government.

Sanchez and Mikati stressed the importance of transforming the ceasefire into a lasting peace by fully implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for a permanent end to hostilities and aims to foster regional stability.

The Spanish prime minister assured Lebanon of continued support in its reconstruction efforts, emphasizing the importance of enabling displaced individuals to return to their homes.

Both leaders also discussed the need for a peaceful and orderly political transition in Syria to preserve its territorial integrity. They agreed that a stable and peaceful Syria is critical for the broader region, particularly for Lebanon.

Spain’s donation and continued engagement signal its strong commitment to supporting Lebanon’s stability and rebuilding efforts in the wake of recent conflicts.
