Sri Lankan PM Harini Amarasuriya to visit India from October 16; focus on education, trade, and regional cooperation
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya will embark on her first official visit to India from October 16 to 18, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Wednesday. The visit marks a significant step in strengthening India–Sri Lanka bilateral relations under New Delhi’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘MAHASAGAR Vision’ frameworks.
During her visit, Prime Minister Amarasuriya will meet senior Indian political leaders to discuss cooperation in education, trade, innovation, and maritime security. She will also deliver the keynote address at the NDTV World Summit, jointly organised by NDTV and the Chintan Research Foundation in New Delhi.
As Sri Lanka’s Education Minister and a distinguished alumna of Hindu College, University of Delhi, Amarasuriya will visit her alma mater, where she will be honoured with a ceremonial Guard of Honour by NCC cadets, a symbolic tree plantation, and student performances. She will also tour IIT Delhi and NITI Aayog to explore collaborations in research, innovation, and technology exchange.
The Sri Lankan leader is expected to attend a business event aimed at deepening trade and commercial linkages between the two nations. The MEA said the visit “continues the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between India and Sri Lanka” and will “advance the deep and multi-faceted bilateral partnership.”
In September, Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi met Amarasuriya in Colombo to discuss maritime and defence cooperation, focusing on ocean security and countering regional challenges such as illegal fishing and terrorism at sea.
India and Sri Lanka have recently signed multiple agreements on power interconnection, digital transformation, health, and defence cooperation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also announced several grant assistance and cultural projects in Sri Lanka, further reinforcing bilateral friendship.
