Suman makes comeback to Indian women’s hockey team

Suman Devi Thoudam, who made her return to the Indian women’s hockey team after a three-year hiatus, is determined to make the most of the opportunity. Having last played for India in 2022, Suman has been included in the squad for the upcoming European leg of the FIH Pro League 2025.

“I’m thrilled to be making a comeback to the Indian squad. I first joined the national camp in 2016 and played for both the junior and senior national teams for a few years. My last outing with the senior team was three years ago in Bhubaneswar against the Netherlands in the Pro League,” said the 25-year-old defender.

Reflecting on her absence from the core team, Suman shared her dedication to improving her skills over the past three years. She worked diligently at the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) NCOE Delhi to hone her defensive tactics, tackling, and man-to-man marking abilities.

Suman, who has previously played under the leadership of Rani Rampal, acknowledged the unique leadership qualities of both Rani and current captain Salima Tete. “Every captain brings a distinct personality to the role. Rani and Salima both offer unique strengths as leaders, and Salima’s leadership is shaped by her experience and learning from Rani,” she said.

With the FIH Pro League 2025 European leg approaching, Suman is focused on cementing her place in the team. “I’ve worked hard to improve my game with the guidance of coaches like Harendra Singh and Vijay sir. I am determined to seize this opportunity and prove myself,” she added.

Suman, who hails from Imphal, Manipur, also encouraged young players to keep pursuing their dreams despite setbacks. “Life is a journey of highs and lows. Believe in yourself, stay disciplined, and work hard, as every sincere effort eventually finds its reward,” she advised.

The Indian team will play in London, Antwerp, and Berlin from June 14 to 29, facing Australia, Argentina, Belgium, and China. India’s campaign will kick off in London with a match against Australia.
