Three Soldiers Killed in Houthi Surprise Attack in Yemen

A surprise attack by the Houthi group in Yemen’s southern Dhale province resulted in the deaths of at least three soldiers and injuries to five others, according to a government military source.

The attack, which occurred early Sunday morning, involved artillery and rockets targeting a government military position in the Bab Ghalaq area of Qataba district, located in northwest Dhale. Among the casualties was Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed al-Hamidi, the commander of the military position.

The Houthis, who govern several northern provinces, have yet to comment on the assault.

On the previous day, fighting between Houthis and government forces in the neighboring province of Lahj led to two soldiers being killed and five more wounded, according to government sources.

These incidents follow a period of relative calm on the front lines since April 2022, when a six-month truce brokered by the United Nations came into effect.

Yemen has been engulfed in civil war since late 2014, when the Houthi group seized control of several northern provinces, displacing the internationally recognized Yemeni government from its capital, Sanaa.
