Trump slaps extra 10% tariff on countries backing ‘anti-American’ BRICS policies
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced an additional 10% tariff on countries that “align themselves with the anti-American policies of BRICS,” escalating tensions amid the ongoing global trade disputes.
The announcement came via Trump’s post on his platform, Truth Social, where he wrote: “Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy.”
He added that formal letters outlining the new tariff rules would begin to reach foreign governments starting Monday at noon (Eastern Time). “The UNITED STATES TARIFF Letters, and/or Deals, with various Countries from around the World, will be delivered starting 12:00 P.M., Monday, July 7th,” he posted.
Trump’s declaration follows strong criticism from BRICS leaders at their summit in Rio de Janeiro. The bloc issued a joint statement condemning the “indiscriminate rise of tariffs” and “unilateral trade measures” that they claim violate World Trade Organization (WTO) norms.
BRICS leaders also took aim at developed countries that impose environmental regulations to justify protectionist trade barriers, arguing such practices harm developing economies and global trade flows.
“The proliferation of trade-restrictive actions, whether in the form of rising tariffs or disguised environmental protectionism, threatens to disrupt global supply chains,” the statement said.
The BRICS alliance has expanded and now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran — forming a powerful bloc of emerging economies increasingly coordinating on trade and economic policy.
Trump’s move is likely to deepen the divide between the U.S. and BRICS, even as his administration intensifies bilateral trade negotiations with select countries.
